A College Metaphor
During my Slots IQ group meeting the other night, Julie told us, “I think one of the things I’ve learned the most through your classes is: Learn the casino. Like, learn your strategies, have a semi-plan, and then learn the casino because it’s very broad and different for everything I’ve learned. I’ve learned now that I need to really study a casino to figure out which strategy works.”

You don’t have to figure out how to learn your casino. I can and will help you with that. But to get it done, you must want it.
As I told my daughter before she went off to college, “There are three things about going to college. First, here’s how it all works. Second, there is paying for it. And third, there’s doing it. And I will help you with the first two, but the third one is on you.”
So, I’ll explain the basics of learning your casino well and then you can go do it, like starting college. Then next, I’ll explain it in deeper detail, like finishing college. And then I’ll explain how to learn your casino well like you’re entering a graduate school program for a master’s degree.

College is my metaphor, and I’m sticking to it. 🙂
The Basics of Knowing Your Casino
The basics are about the casino’s physical layout. Deliberation and intent go into designing casinos, so checking it out will start you down the road on your casino’s intention toward you as a slot machine player. How do you do this?

It’s simple. Start from your favorite slot machine, which I hope you’ve won on occasionally, and stand there but look around. Where are you in the casino? What do you see?
In what direction is the main entrance? Second entrance? Café or food court?
Maybe you can’t see any of those landmarks from your favorite machine. So, go for a walk. Go to find the main entrance, the secondary entrance, or the entrance from the parking structure.

Find any escalators to another level. Or the hallway to hotel registration. Whichever.
All of them are important. Second, find the widest aisle. It’s likely to be pointed directly at the entrance to the high-limit slots room, although in my experience of visiting many new-to-me casinos, half the time, the main aisle passes by it.
Walk the entire length of the main aisle. Look at it. Is it straight?

Does it curve? Is it wavy? What are the visible landmarks as you walk from one end to the other?
Is there a Café? A food court area? The high-limit room?
Is there a car giveaway area? And along it, which intersection is the largest? Second largest crossing? What’s going on at them?

Understanding the multi-million-dollar design of your casino’s physical layout matters to understanding your casino well.
Winning with Just the Basics
Staying with the basics, next, pick one of my winning slot strategies. Maybe you’ve already done that. Or perhaps you’re new to my content.

Either way, review what you just saw during your walk from the perspective of my strategies. Did you see slot machines facing the café? Is the main intersection on the major aisle an elaborate setup?
Does the end of every row of slot machines have a machine capping the end of that row? Or is there no such thing where that lack tells us more about the casino than anything else? Your walkthrough is an initial evaluation of which of my strategies will work at your casino.
And Take a Step Back
Let’s move a little deeper into learning your casino well. Take a step back. Is your state one of the U.S. states providing monthly return statistics?
Does it live under a cloud of a theoretical payout limit or two? Don’t know? Check your state at ProfessorSlots.com, followed by a slash and your state’s two-letter designation.

There, check the section Theoretical Payout and Return Statistics for answers. Nineteen states have only a minimum theoretical payout limit. Twenty-nine states have both a minimum and maximum theoretical payout limit.
Correction, thirty states because Virginia recently got casinos and created gaming regs with an 84% lower and 100% upper limit. Knowing what general rules your casino is forced to live under is essential to understanding your casino.
Knowing Your Casino Well
But let’s talk about how to gain a more advanced understanding of your casino. How? Easy.

After doing all I’ve outlined with walking through your casino to understand it better, visit another casino. How is it different? You’ll see the other choices available to your casino which it chose NOT to implement.
What might your casino have done instead? What conscious multi-million-dollar decision did your casino not choose to make. But perhaps it will for its next major renovation?
If given the option, visit five other casinos and walk through them. Don’t expect to learn them as well as you probably already know your casino because that will take multiple trips. But you will see which other casinos are far worse than yours.

And perhaps, which casinos are far better? Because you should know, right?
Summary of Knowing Your Casino
Knowing your casino well isn’t hard. But it would be best if you wanted to learn it.
