Q & A with Jon from Professor Slots
When did you start podcasting?
I started podcasting in mid-September, publishing an episode trailer to help get iTunes set up.
On October 5th, I started publishing weekly episodes.
Why did you start podcasting?
I felt a podcast would be a great way to reach my audience, to drive traffic to my website.
I’ve had a website up and running for almost a year to post blog articles on, without a lot of success. It was then I also started my Libsyn account, and immediately pre-faded.
But, I kept the account open and eventually came back to it.
I have to say thanks for the excellent advice I’ve heard on The Feed and from Dave Jackson about getting started.
I’ve only published one episode at a time, the last four episodes on a weekly schedule, and have been pleased with the results so far.
What’s your show about?
How to win at slot machine casino gambling. Is that niche enough for ya?
My audience are slot machine casino gamblers who already gamble via slots, but would like better results.
Winning isn’t just about making a monetary profit, although it definitely can be for some. But, most slots enthusiasts have entertainment-focused goals.
The second most common goal is to focus on earning complimentary gifts, or comps.
The job I’ve given myself is to offer guidance and clarity for slots enthusiasts in the casino environment.
I discuss a bit of the history of slots, for perspective on how the technology has changed over time due to social pressures as well as customer needs, all the way through assessing casinos and slot machines for success at modern casinos.
Slots is currently an underserved market, which I am trying to rectify though podcasting as well as by blogs on my website at professorslots.com.
I feel like I’m only slightly ahead of a crowd of podcasters and bloggers who will also serve this market.
Why? Because, it’s not the first time this sort of thing has happened to slots. Just over 20 years ago, computers were integrated into slot machines – allowing programmable visuals and sounds, not to mention adding a random number generator for calculating the odds of winning.
As a result of that technological development, at least 60 books were published on casino slots between 1994 and 2004.
Now is another time of great technology change in casinos, with the introduction of WIFI and central computers with sophisticated operating systems automating high volume activities.
One such automation has been the changing the odds on winning on slot machines, which have to be adjusted regularly for casinos to meet their financial goals.
What was once accomplished manually in 7–10 days by an army of slots mechanics can now be done several times a day via a central computer.
I mention this particular change because this central computer operating system has taken what was once almost entirely random odds of winning at slots and introduced recognizable patterns of winning.
I myself have won 90 taxable jackpots, that’s monetary payouts worth $1,200 or more, over 9 months and then a luxury car – and also made a substantial profit doing so.
I hope this description of my show has offered some insight to your listeners that plenty of podcast topics exist which are not currently being served, or not served well, and these topics can be both very niche as well as potentially wildly interesting to a dedicated audience.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc. Starting from
Starting from the computer, I have a late 2013 15-inch MacBook connected to a 29-inch monitor.
On this laptop, I use GarageBand for editing, plus online services Auphonic for audio leveling and Rev for transcriptions.
Other hardware includes a Scarlett 2i2, an in-line Model SS–1 from Simply Sound for 27 dB of clean gain, and an ATR2100 microphone from Audio Technica.
This dynamic-style mic is loaded into an On Stage MY–420 shock-mount attached to a DR Pro Tripod Mic Stand with Telescoping Boom.
There are also accessories like a pop filter and lengthy audio cables.
How have you promoted your podcast?
Over the last year, I have been invited to be interviewed on three radio shows or podcasts, including High Roller Radio out of Toronto, Vegas Never Sleeps in Las Vegas, and a nationally syndicated radio show out of New Jersey called House of Cards.
These interviews have been released, but did not include any mention of my podcast show Professor Slots because I had not yet launched.
Otherwise, I’ve been posting on my Facebook Page with its 4,000 Page Likes as well as my personal Facebook profile as well as Twitter.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Well, I wish I’d known that 690 dead website links trashes your website SEO.
But, that’s the website. With regards to podcasting, I wish I’d started sooner.
